THE BEVERLY HILLS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
SUPPORTS CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 56
BEVERLY HILLS, California (July 28, 2016) – The Board of Directors of the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce voted this week to support California Proposition 56, the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016.
Proposition 56 will increase the tax on cigarettes by $2.00 per pack and a similar amount for other tobacco products, providing revenue for healthcare programs, tobacco use prevention and control, and tobacco-related disease research and law enforcement, amongst other worthy goals.
Tobacco use continues to present serious health challenges to our community, including cancers and related diseases and health conditions. This is especially the case for minors in our community. Studies show that about 90 percent of smokers start as teens, starting a lifetime of tobacco use and potential addiction. Proposition 56 will help save lives by discouraging tobacco use.
Revenues collected from this tobacco use tax would be deposited directly into a new special fund, called the “California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016 Fund.” Revenues will go towards improving existing health care programs, prevent smoking, and funding research into cancer and other tobacco-related diseases. Additional funds will go towards law enforcement training to deter sale of tobacco products to minors and to school programs to prevent and reduce the use of tobacco products by young people. Therefore, Proposition 56 ensures accountability for spending of these funds.
