Sergeant Jeffrey Newman, Community Relations Unit of the Beverly Hills Police Department, will be discussing updates on crime statistics and trends, BHPD security technology, and how business owners can implement safety for crime prevention.
About the Speaker:
Sergeant Jeffrey Newman began his journey in public service with a strong educational foundation, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Norwich University in 2008. Following his academic achievement, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving on active duty from 2008 to 2012. His experience includes deployment to the Middle East in 2009 and with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2011, demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and leadership under challenging circumstances.
Upon leaving active duty in 2012, Sgt. Newman transitioned to the Marine Corps Reserves, where he continued to serve until 2019, ultimately attaining the rank of Major. In the same year, he joined the Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD). After graduating from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Academy, he embarked on a distinguished career at the BHPD, holding numerous positions within the department and reflecting his unwavering commitment to public safety and service. In 2016, he became a Field Training Officer, and his other roles have included Citizen Police Academy Lead Instructor, Honor Guard Member, Peer Support Member, Treasurer for the Beverly Hills Police Officers Association, Anti-Racial Profiling Instructor, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor, Drug Recognition Expert, and TASER Instructor.
While serving as a Field Training Officer, Sgt. Newman continued to pursue his education, obtaining a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Arizona State University in 2017. His advanced education has further honed his skills and knowledge, allowing him to excel in his various roles within the BHPD.
Sgt. Newman's hard work and commitment to excellence have not gone unnoticed. In 2016, he was awarded the Life Saving Medal for his heroic actions in the line of duty. In 2017, he was honored with the Chief's Core Values Award as part of the Field Training Officers Cadre, showcasing his unwavering dedication to upholding the department's values and mission.
In 2021, Sgt. Newman was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned as a Patrol Supervisor, during which he also served as the Field Training Supervisor and TASER Program Supervisor. He later transitioned to the Community Relations Unit as the Community Relations Sergeant. In this role, he strives to build lasting relationships between the police department and the community it serves. His passion for promoting public safety and fostering trust has contributed to the success of numerous community programs and initiatives.
