Special GAC meeting, Oct. 15 - Minimum Wage Panel
Please join us on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 15 for a SPECIAL GAC meeting about best practices to cope with a possible minimum wage increase! Owners of restaurants and small businesses are especially encouraged to attend.
On Thursday, Oct. 15, the Chamber’s Govt. Affairs Committee (GAC) will hold a special meeting regarding a possible increase in the minimum wage. Minimum wage ordinances have recently passed in both the City and County of Los Angeles and other cities are discussing passing a similar ordinance that would raise wages to $15/hr. by 2020. The Chamber has already surveyed its membership twice about the impacts of a minimum wage ordinance and reported its findings to the City Council. In September, the Beverly Hills City Council expressed an interest in exploring a similar increase (click here to read the staff report).
The panel discussion on Tuesday will focus on best practices businesses have used to adopt to wage increases. The purpose of this meeting is to prepare businesses to cope with incremental increases in the minimum wage and share strategies that have worked in the past. There will be ample time for a Q & A with a panel of experts from the legal, academic and business world.
The panel will consist of the following individuals:
- Kelly Scott, Attorney and Partner at Ervin Cohen & Jessup. Mr. Scott specializes in employment law.
- Dan Flaming is President of the LA Economic Roundtable. He has managed community development and affordable housing programs, and administering job training and research programs for LA County. Mr. Flaming has a Ph.D. in urban studies and has led more than 50 research projects at the Roundtable.
- Matt Sutton, Vice President, Government Affairs + Public Policy for the California Restaurant Association. He oversees the CRA’s Government Affairs + Public Policy department which includes an advocacy component with state and local lobbyists and a political affairs component.
The panel will be moderated by local attorney Mitch Dawson.
Note: This meeting is in ADDITION to our regularly scheduled GAC meeting at 9 a.m. that day.
